Ah Instagram. The main platform responsible for the word “selfie” being Oxford Dictionary recognised. Whether you love it or hate it, the endless photo-sharing app is here to stay …and there’s a good reason for it. After being created back in 2010 by two geeky Stanford guys, the social media app now boasts a crazy 500 million monthly users and shows no signs of slowing down. It’s no wonder businesses are taking advantage. But are they taking full advantage? Here are 5 ways to better use Instagram as a marketing tool and get ahead of the competition.
1. Hold a contest
The Social Media Examiner says that Insta contests are a great way to get noticed and engage your customers. You can do this by running a hashtag user-generated content contest, like-to-win contest or even an email-gated contest.
2. Post better photos
If you’re using your iPhone, use the normal camera instead of the front-facing one (unless you want your pictures to turn out grainy af *cringe*). Also, apps like VSCO Cam or Snapseed are the best of the best when it comes to photo editing and it’s always a good idea to stick to a theme.
3. Use hashtags
Hashtags help your fans find you on Instagram, but be sure to make them relevant to your business. Apparently, the most popular hashtags are #love #instagood #photooftheday #tbt and #beautiful, so if you can subtly work these into your captions… you’re sweet. Avoid using a million hashtags though – this makes you look spammy and does your business zero favours.
4. Track your stats
Keeping track of your Instagram statistics is super important ’cause it gives you clues on managing your account more effectively. Programs like Stats for Instagram – which is free and tailored specifically to your account – lets you know how well you’ve engaged your audience, which hashtags have been the most effective and the best time of the day to post based on your user statistics.
5. Engage in the Instagram community
Liking and commenting on other photos helps get your business noticed and encourages users to check out your profile. The best way is to search hashtags relevant to your business so you cross paths with those who would potentially be interested in your content.
